Summer is approaching, and many people choose biking as one way to enjoy the warmer weather. If you bike to campus, make sure you take steps to reduce your risk of bicycle theft:
Lock your bike securely. Never use a cable lock—use at least one steel lock or an un-cuttable chain.
If you forgot or have lost your bike lock, check out the campus Loan-a-Lock program.
Store your bike in a secure location. Bike rack and outdoor storage locker locations can be found on UBC Okanagan’s online campus map.
Bike lockers are available next to ADM, ASC, Commons, EME, Fipke, RHS, Science, and UNC. Visit the Parking Services website for more information on how to request a bike locker.
Bike racks are available outside most academic buildings. Make sure you park at a bike rack that is securely attached to the ground, buildings, or other stationary objects, and make sure it’s free of damage that could compromise your bike’s safety.
Make sure you don’t park your bike anywhere other than a bike locker or bike rack.
Bring your bike inside at night. Over 90% of bike thefts on campus happen after 5pm. Use a bike storage locker or bring your bike inside overnight.
Know the details about your bike. Collect information like the make, model, serial number, and identifying features of your bike. Keep receipts and pictures as proof of ownership. This can help authorities identify your bike if it’s stolen.
Consider registering your bike on UBC Okanagan’s Garage 529 page. Garage 529 connects you to a network of riders, bike shops, police, schools, and cities who can help you locate in your bike in the event that it’s stolen. You also request a 529 Shield sticker as an additional identifier by emailing security.dispatch@ubc.ca. Placing a shield sticker somewhere visible on your bike, like just below the top seat tube, can act as a visible deterrent against bike theft.
