Determining Waste Stream

HSE developed the Waste Flow Chart to help waste generators determine which waste stream their waste falls into, and what to do with it.

Some waste streams can’t be handled through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System. Please contact HSE to discuss options.

  • Step 2: Prepare for pickup
    • Treat: Ensure a decontaminated exterior with no leaks or tears
    • Tag: Fill out and attach a tag for biological or chemical waste (see below)
    • Store: Ensure the container is no more than ¾ full (liquids must be given ¼ head space) and stored in an appropriate location
  • Step 3: Request pickup through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System.

Waste Tags

All tags must be completely filled out with the type of waste, the name of the generator and the name of the PI / supervisor.
